Belagavi: In response to the question raised by Hubballi-Dharwad (West)MLA Aravind Bellad during the Karnataka Legislative Assembly session, Urban Development Minister Suresh B.S. announced that the government is actively considering the establishment of a separate municipal corporation for Dharwad.

Mr. Bellad highlighted the exponential growth of Dharwad, emphasizing its burgeoning population that has now exceeded 3 lakhs. He further underscored the city’s notable characteristics, including a high population density, and a robust industrial and educational infrastructure.

The Karnataka Municipal Corporation Act of 1976 outlines specific criteria for a city to be eligible for a separate municipal corporation. These criteria include a minimum population of 3 lakhs, a population density of at least 3,000 per square kilometer, and an annual revenue surpassing Rs. 6 crore.

Minister Suresh B.S. assured that the government is prepared to take concrete steps towards the formation of a separate Dharwad Municipal Corporation. To initiate this process, the Dharwad district administration needs to submit a formal proposal to the Directorate of Municipal Administration. Once the proposal is received, it will be meticulously reviewed by the government, and if approved, the Urban Development Department will orchestrate the necessary measures for its implementation.

This proposed move signifies a significant development for Dharwad, recognizing its status as a rapidly evolving urban center with a growing populace and substantial economic and educational contributions. The potential establishment of a separate municipal corporation aligns with the government’s commitment to fostering the efficient governance and development of cities across the state.

Local stakeholders and residents eagerly await further updates as the administrative wheels are set in motion, anticipating positive outcomes for the future trajectory of Dharwad.
